Superb representation of Nichiren Daishonin, a Japanese Buddhist monk from the Kamakura period in the 12th century.

Edo period, 18th century, Japan.

He founded a new school of Mahayana Buddhism by the name of Hokke-shu alias the school of the Lotus. Nichiren was in his time a controversial figure who escaped death several times because he was virulent towards other Buddhist schools. Nichiren preached the abolition of the Zen, Nembutsu, Ritsu and others branches.

Nichiren Buddhism continued to develop over the following centuries until today. Over time, it became one of the largest Buddhist schools in Japan.
